The planet was once home to the Ancients, who called themselves the Cetra. The Cetra traveled the planet cultivating life wherever they went, and were said to be able to enter communion with the planet itself.

The reactors siphon energy called mako out of the planet and convert it into electricity, giving consumers access to technological comforts and innovations that ease and improve the quality of everyday life.

Many of the main characters come to outlive the people and the places they once used to identify with, struggling to fit in their current reality.
